Advantages And Disadvantages Of MS Excel Programming

By Kathleen Kennedy

The majority of the computer in many offices and homes today depend on Microsoft software for their entire working. One of the products is the Microsoft office that comes with various application packages that facilitate several distinct office tasks such as word processing, mathematical data manipulation, data presentation and graphical data analysis among many others. Some pros and cons of MS excel programming are as follows.

This application is a part of main program Microsoft office, and it is customized to perform various mathematical analysis and data entry. They can perform multiple data analysis including graphs and chart generation, sorting and grading. The program, however, has some strengths and weakness though the term is relative to the context of operations and expertise of the operator. The level of strengths and weakness will be significantly low depending on the training and experience.

Among the few advantages that may be attached to the package are as follows. The database design can allow you do simulation and always the program will give you the same results for the same entry thus constant execution a desired feature for some tasks. The consistency makes it ideal for data analysis.

The other desirable characteristic of a module is its ability to perform calculations faster and accurately. Once the functions are served with the appropriate inputs, the execution is a faster process, and results are laid out. The trait saves time and improves on the employee production. The powerful computational power of the product saves energy used and time too and thus maximizing utilization of resources.

The package also offers a good ground for minimal errors especially for those who are good in macro programming. These people can write code in the visual basic language and run them without much hustle especially if they have written correct code following the right language syntax and logic.

With all that said a look at the weaknesses or rather constraints would be okay. However what is considered as a weakness here is not to mean is a problem as per say. The first constraint is the fact that one must be knowledgeable in basic visual programming for him or her to perform the task of writing the code. The language has its own rules and logic that are essential for designing any program for running macros.

The other thing is that the program does not allow the export of the programs to another machine. This means there is need to rewrite the code for execution into another machine. It has a no feature to allow a stand-alone excel or visual basic program and hence the inconvenience when working on multiple machines.

Lastly, there is a tendency by the company to upgrade as years goes by and in the process develop newer versions of the excel program. Although they try to keep a good link with the previous versions, at times, the previous versions may need you to do some changes to your code for it to run. All the same debugging is not an exception here since errors are common. If you write a macro, you need to provide technical assistance to those accessing your work.
